SPRINGFIELD, Ill.-The Illinois Commerce Commission on Friday approved the proposed merger between Bell Atlantic Corp. and GTE Corp., bringing the $53 billion deal a step closer to reality.
The proposed merger is still under consideration by seven states and the Federal Communications Commission. The Justice Department has agreed to the transaction, as have the shareholders of both companies.
