LUXEMBOURG-Millicom International Cellular S.A. said its worldwide operations added 174,627 new cellular subscribers in the third quarter, bringing its world total to 1.92 million as of Sept. 30. This represents a 64-percent increase from its Sept. 30, 1998, total of 1.17 million.
“MIC reported a sequential quarterly increase in subscribers of 9 percent in the third quarter, continuing the exceptional subscriber growth we experienced in the first six months,” said Marc Beuls, MIC president and CEO. “Capacity has been increased to reflect the strong demand environment, and this in association with increased sales and marketing [spending] will drive further growth in the fourth quarter of the current year.
“In addition, we continue to roll out our prepaid program, most recently in Vietnam, but we are also in the process of rolling out in Russia.”
In other news, MIC increased its interest in Guatemalan Comcel from 47 percent to 55 percent.
