NORTEL TO BUILD NETWORK FOR MEXICO’S UNEFON

MEXICO CITY-Nortel Networks announced it signed an agreement with Sistemas Profesionales de Comunicacion S.A. de C.V., a subsidiary of Unefon, to build a high performance wireless network in Mexico.

Under terms of the five-year, $480 million agreement, Nortel will supply Unefon with cdmaOne equipment and services, including a prepaid system. Nortel said it also will be responsible for the planning, construction and deployment of the wireless network.

Service will begin in December, and the network eventually will provide service to more than 1.5 million people throughout Mexico, said Nortel.

Nortel also agreed to provide Unefon with approximately $600 million in associated vendor financing, the company said.
