LONDON-British Telecommunications plc and Microsoft Corp. announced a wireless Internet trial with about 1,000 mobile phone users in the United Kingdom and Norway. Users will be able to access Microsoft Exchange-based calendaring, address lists, Web content and online information services from their wireless phones.
The three-month trial involves British Broadcasting Corp., Credit Suisse First Boston, KPMG L.L.P., Nortel Networks and Telenor Mobil. Sagem SA and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. have developed Web-browser mobile phone equipment for use in the trial. Microsoft’s Exchange Server will be the primary messaging platform and its microbrowser Web software will be used as the mobile phone interface, said the companies.
The trials will help the companies prepare for “a sizable commercial deployment expected early next year,” said a BT statement. BT and Microsoft announced an alliance earlier this year.
