HOUSTON-Crown Castle International Corp.’s subsidiary, Crown Castle Australia Ltd., signed a definitive agreement to purchase about 700 wireless communications towers from Cable & Wireless Optus for $135 million, including an exclusive right to develop all future tower sites for Optus during the next six years.
“The demand for colocation on towers in Australia is very strong,” said Ted Miller Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Crown Castle. “Three newly licensed wireless operators are deploying regional networks for their 2000 launch, and the three incumbent national carriers are expanding their current 900 MHz networks and deploying new 1800 MHz networks.”
Crown Castle also announced it appointed Peter Abery as president and managing director of CCAL and its subsidiary, CCAL Towers Pty. Abery was managing director of Vodafone Network in Australia prior to his appointment at CCAL.
