There are four main international groups with interests in Central American telecommunications:
Telefonica-Spain’s main operator that in recent years has strongly expanded overseas, mainly toward Latin America.
Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex)-Mexico’s ex-PTT. The company has made several attempts to enter Central America. Though it has not always been successful, it is expected the Mexican telecom giant will sooner or later be present in these markets.
Millicom-one of the fastest-growing companies in the telecommunications market worldwide. In 1998, the Luxembourg-based company had an income of US$448 million dollars, 29-percent more than the previous year.
BellSouth-U.S.-based company with heavy Latin American presence, operating in nine different countries of the region.
