TELSTRA TO EXTEND AUSTRALIA CDMA NETWORK

SAN FRANCISCO-Telstra Corp. Ltd. in Australia will extend its Code Division Multiple Access mobile phone network to include country locations currently covered by Telstra’s Global System for Mobile communications network, but lacking in analog coverage, said the company.

“Telstra’s first priority is of course to CDMA rollout into areas that are currently serviced by the analog network … once we have achieved this we will commence CDMA rollout into the remainder of the analog network areas and these GSM-only country locations,” said Jonathan Marchbank, Telstra’s managing director, mobiles.

“There are more than 100 towns and areas across Australia that are covered by Telstra’s GSM that have no analog coverage. We plan to roll out into these areas with CDMA commencing early 2000,” Marchbank said.
