CELLNET DEMOS REMOTE METER-READING

SAN CARLOS, Calif.-CellNet Data Systems Inc. said it successfully demonstrated with the City of Burlingame, Calif., its wireless network solution, which enables parking meters to send real-time alarms and other signals over CellNet networks to prevent parking meter theft.

“Prior to installation in February, the City of Burlingame had suffered losses totaling approximately $60,000 in lost parking meter revenue and stolen meters in a period of six months,” said Gary Missel, Burlingame chief of police. “To date, none of the meters protected by CellNet have been stolen.”

The parking meter’s communications devices interface with the city’s central information system via the CellNet network and alert the Burlingame Police Dept. of unauthorized coin vault entry, said CellNet.
