NEW YORK-Ericsson Inc. acquired Maryland-based Torrent Networking Technologies Corp. for $450 million and Silicon Valley-based TouchWave Inc. for $46 million, in an effort to move into next-generation Internet-protocol carrier networking, said the company.
Torrent offers Ericsson routing equipment, which will serve as a label-edge router to complete Ericsson’s Multi Protocol Label Switching solution for IP over Asynchronous Transfer Mode networks.
TouchWave’s WebSwitch 2000 and WebSwitch 1608 complement Ericsson’s Business Phone 250, MD110 PBX product lines and offer telephony solutions to customers building IP-centric networks.
“This acquisition (Torrent) moves Ericsson squarely into the IP playing field and will have a substantial impact on our ability to provide a complete data networking solution,” said Sven-Christer Nilsson, president and chief executive officer of Ericsson. “This is in line with our strategy to offer fully-integrated capabilities for converged wireless and wireline voice and data networks.”
