REDWOOD CITY, Calif.-Unwired Planet Inc. announced it changed its name to Phone.com Inc. and elected former Federal Communications Commission Chairman Reed Hundt to the company’s board of directors.
“The reason for the name change is because we wanted a name that more clearly reflects our unique position in this new convergence of wireless telephony and the Internet,” said Ben Linder, the company’s vice president of marketing.
Phone.com recently filed for an initial public offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Linder said the name change was easier to enact while still a private company.
Linder said Hundt was elected as a director “to complement our board with his expertise.” He did not say whether Hundt would focus on any particular area of the company’s operations.
