Siemens’ Information and Communication Networks Group, T-Mobil and Unwired
Planet Inc. announced they will participate in a field trial to integrate Wireless Application Protocol compatible
software from Unwired Planet into Global System for Mobile communications infrastructure. Under the agreement,
Siemens will integrate Unwired Planet’s UP.Link Server into the GSM network it provides operator T-Mobil, a German
carrier based in Bonn. Siemens will also provide WAP-compatible phones, according to the agreement.
Tecnomen
Germany said it signed an agreement with KomTel GmbH of Flensburg, Germany, to supply its unified messaging
service for KomTel’s fixed-telephone network. “Our unified messaging service combines KomTel’s Internet and
telephony services and will set a new standard within the tough, competitive German market,” said Jari Anttonen,
vice president of Tecnomen’s Enhanced Services System.
Japan
Motorola Inc. said DDI, Japan’s second-largest
cellular service carrier, commercially launched three Code Division Multiple Access networks, known as cdmaOne
networks, using infrastructure designed, manufactured and installed by Motorola’s Network Solutions Sector. The
launch adds the regions of Shikoku, Hokuriku and Chugoku, which includes more than 500 cities, towns and villages,
encompassing more than 15 million people.
United Kingdom
Lightbridge Inc. announced Orange plc of the
United Kingdom selected Lightbridge’s Churn Prophet software and consulting services to help it predict and reduce
customer churn and evaluate market and channel performance.
WinStar Communications Inc. has been granted
preferred access to 38 GHz spectrum covering more than 55 million people in major cities throughout the United
Kingdom, including London, Birmingham and Manchester, said the company. WinStar will provide high-speed data
and information services to large multinational business customers and medium-sized companies in the United
Kingdom. The company said London is its fourth-largest targeted international market and it plans to launch service
there later this year.
