CANNES, France-InterWave Communications International Ltd. introduced its new packet-
switched networking capability that provides interoperability between Global System for Mobile communications
wireless and Internet protocol networks at the GSM World Congress Feb. 23-25 in Cannes, France.
Based on
InterWave’s “GSM Network in a Box,” demonstrations showed how the end-to-end GSM/IP network
interconnects directly with a managed IP wide area network/local area network and delivers voice quality comparable
to that of today’s GSM mobile calls.
“The ‘GSM Network in a Box’ provides network operators with increased
capacity to support high-bandwidth transport of voice and data traffic, without the excessive costs associated with new
infrastructure buildouts,” said Dr. Priscilla Lu, founder, chairwoman, president and chief executive officer of
InterWave. “Eventually we plan to implement remote radio access via Internet or intranet to further distribute the
intelligence of voice and data networking for higher throughput at lower cost,” said Lu.
