NEW YORK-MCI WorldCom, Jackson, Miss., announced Nov. 20 it has formed the MCI WorldCom Fund, a venture-capital fund to invest in companies “that can create demand for and increase the performance of [our] services and networks, and also deliver superior financial returns.”
With an initial value of about $500 million, the fund’s existing investment portfolio “includes companies providing call-center solutions, network-based data distribution and work-flow solutions and network-based distance learning, transaction processing and systems integration.”
Susan Mayer, senior vice president of MCI WorldCom, is president of the venture-capital fund. She reports to the fund’s board, which comprises three members of MCI WorldCom’s board of directors: Lawrence C. Tucker, a partner in Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. and co-manager of the 1818 Private Equity Funds; Gordon Macklin, chairman of White River Corp. and former chairman and chief executive officer of Nasdaq; and Bert C. Roberts Jr., chairman both of MCI WorldCom and its venture-capital fund.
