FORT LEE, N.J.-TSR Wireless L.L.C. announced it purchased a narrowband personal communications services license from AT&T Two-Way Messaging Communications Inc. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
TSR’s acquisition of the AT&T license combined with its earlier acquisition of American Paging gives the company two nationwide NPCS channels to take advantage of future opportunities in advanced paging applications.
“We believe there is great potential for these applications,” said TSR President Mitchell Sacks. “As technology develops, having two national NPCS licenses will give [us] the ability to aggressively market and develop low-cost wireless applications for consumers and businesses.”
TSR’s new NPCS license was one of two originally owned by AT&T Wireless Services Inc., consisting of two symmetrically paired 50 kilohertz channels. The other license was sold for $30 million to Metrocall Inc. as part of its $205 million acquisition of AT&T’s Advanced Messaging Division. AT&T paid $160 million for two licenses at the original Federal Communications Commission auction in 1994.
“We strongly believe NPCS will be a strong growth market for many years to come,” Sacks continued. “With ReFLEX 25 networks already in development and Motorola (Inc.) and Glenayre (Technologies Inc.) operating working subscriber bases, this license offers us the potential to expand our client services and differentiate ourselves in the industry.”
