SENATE WON’T BAN SATELLITE EXPORTS TO CHINA

WASHINGTON-The Senate, pressured by Democratic accusations the GOP wanted to embarrass President Clinton while he was in China, has declined for now to forbid satellite exports to that country.

The House in May attached several amendments to a defense authorization bill to put such a ban into effect, following allegations that satellite technology transfers to China helped it improve its nuclear missile capability.

Justice Department and congressional investigators are looking into the satellite transfer allegations and Congress could address the export control issue later this summer or this fall.
