DALLAS-Northern Telecom announced a plan to deploy a series of experimental third-generation wireless networks beginning in the fourth quarter in support of the International Telecommunication Union’s IMT-2000 initiative.
Nortel plans to explore the evolution of Global System for Mobile communications, cdmaOne and Time Division Multiple Access networks. Emphasis will be placed on the smooth transition to standards convergence for existing operators and subscribers, Nortel said.
Innovations in wideband Code Division Multiple Access, Internet Protocol networking and multimedia in realizing the IMT-2000 goal of a single standard also will be explored, said Nortel.
