CTIA RELEASES DATA SURVEY RESULTS

WASHINGTON-The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association’s latest Semi-Annual Data Survey reported the industry gained 11.2 million wireless phone subscribers in 1997, which it said led to lower bills and increased revenues.

CTIA estimated annual revenues increased 16.3 percent, to $27.4 billion, and that the average customer monthly bill fell to $42.78-a drop of almost $5. Also, the industry’s employee base increased by 30 percent and the cumulative capital investment in equipment and infrastructure increased 41 percent to $46 billion.

The CTIA survey is conducted every six months and includes the input of member and non-member cellular, personal communications services and enhanced specialized mobile radio providers. The organization said the survey was sent to 2,228 operators and received a 90 percent response rate.
