ERICSSON LICENSED FOR SUN JAVA

MOUNTAINVIEW, California, United States-Sun Microsystems Inc. announced it licensed L.M. Ericsson to use and distribute its PersonalJava platform and Java Application Environment.

Ericsson said it intends to use Java-based technology to support development of third-generation products and systems based on W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) technology.

Java is a programming language allowing software developers to create applications that can be used on various devices powered by different operating systems. Java-written applications exist on a shared network server, rather than being stored on the end-user device.

Sun said other wireless equipment manufacturers using or planning to use Java include Alcatel Telecom, Motorola Inc., Nokia Corp., Northern Telecom Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Texas Instruments’ Wireless Communications Bureau.
