VODAFONE TO EXPAND DATA NETWORK COVERAGE

LONDON-Vodafone Data Network Ltd. announced an expansion to extend its data communications service to several areas of the United Kingdom.

The company has made a significant investment in new base-station equipment that has already brought services to areas in Belfast, the Highlands, Tayside, Northumberland, Yorks, South Wales, Suffolk and Kent.

Vodafone is offering both fixed and mobile data applications, such as credit-card authorization, security-alarm signaling and meter reading. Previously, retailers relied on landline links for these purposes, but landline links are slower, more vulnerable to tampering and commit frequent errors, the company said.

“We have very close working relationships with our customers and systems integrators and are continually helping to develop innovative new applications for our technology,” said John Smith, director and general manager at Vodafone. “The substantial investment in network expansion is a direct result of securing major contracts with new and existing customers and seeking to meet their needs.”

Vodafone’s largest data contract in the United Kingdom is with British Gas Services, incorporating more than 5,000 engineers.
