BOSTON-Sprint Spectrum L.P. said it launched Code Division Multiple Access personal communications services in Washington, D.C./Baltimore alongside the company’s Global System for Mobile communications network.
Customers can trade in their existing GSM handsets for $25 credit toward a CDMA handset, said Sprint PCS. The company does not plan to phase out its GSM network.
Sprint PCS purchased the remaining shares in its partnership with American Personal Communications in January to make the GSM venture wholly owned by Sprint PCS. APC was the first PCS operator to launch service in the United States. Sprint PCS previously held a 58.5-percent interest in the partnership.
