PCIA RESPONDS TO IVAN

ALEXANDRIA, Va.-In response to MCI Communication Corp.’s “Ivan” ads, which portray American consumers as oppressed due to the lack of freedom to choose from more than one local phone service provider, the Personal Communications Industry Association launched its own parody ad, “Ivan’s Search for Freedom is Over.”

PCIA’s advertisement, which appeared in the Washington Post and Roll Call, read in part, “But the rest of the telecommunications industry doesn’t want you to know what Ivan knows … Real competition exists. It’s the wireless industry.”

The ad also mentions that 42 percent of all Americans would consider switching their local phone service to wireless, according to a national poll commissioned by PCIA and conducted by Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates earlier this month.
