Motorola Inc. announced it has reached an agreement with Latin American paging provider Alfa-Bip of Mexico to provide infrastructure for a nationwide expansion of its paging services. Under the terms of the agreement, Alfa-Bip agreed to buy Motorola’s Nucleus one-way paging transmitters. Alfa-Bip is Mexico’s oldest paging provider. In 1996, the company was awarded a contract from Mexico’s Secretary of Communications and Transport for a nationwide network.
Architel Systems Corp. has entered an agreement with Airtel Movil S.A. of Spain to license Architel’s provisioning software, Automatic Service Activation Program. Under the perpetual license, Airtel will be entitled to use ASAP for service activation and network configuration of Global System for Mobile communications services in Spain. As part of a collaborative arrangement, Andersen Consulting has been retained by Airtel to provide business integration services in connection with the installation of the ASAP system, and Architel has been employed by Andersen as a subcontractor to provide certain professional services related to the project.
Brightpoint Inc. and Nokia Corp. have entered into an agreement for Brightpoint to provide repair, training and related services for Nokia Mobile Phones in China, the companies announced.
Talks between Norwegian Telenor and Swedish Telia on a possible merger between the two companies have ended fruitlessly, as the owners of the two companies, the Norwegian and the Swedish governments, could not agree upon an equal balance in a new merged company, said Telenor. Telenor, which still thinks considerable gain could have occurred through a merger, wanted to secure lower-priced services and participate in a company with “the strength and competence to establish itself as an important actor” in the global telecommunications and information technology industry, the company said.
Indonesian mobile carrier PT Excelcomindo Pratama, expecting substantial growth this year, has migrated from LHS’ customer care and billing system, Business Support and Control System version 3, to BSCS version 4, the companies announced.
