KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Sprint Spectrum L.P. said it anticipates signing up its 1-millionth subscriber this week. The company also said its personal communications services subscribers used more than 1 billion minutes of airtime during 1997.
Sprint PCS’ average minutes of use and revenue per subscriber figures for 1997 “are substantially ahead of wireless industry averages,” said the company. Sprint Corp., Sprint PCS’ majority owner, said average revenue per user was $64 as a result of Sprint PCS’ marketing plans that encourage higher wireless usage.
The company declined to announce Sprint PCS’ churn rates, but said they were in line with what other start-up PCS companies are experiencing.
“Due to our size and our marketing innovation, we’ve achieved the 1 million subscriber threshold in two years, while it took the entire U.S. cellular industry four years to reach that goal,” said Andrew Sukawaty, chief executive officer of Sprint PCS. “Sprint PCS is now the nation’s largest PCS provider in both number of customers and markets served.”
Sprint PCS expects to release its financial results in late March.
