DALLAS-Lucent Technologies Inc. announced its new wireless system, Short Message Service, has been installed in PrimeCo Personal Communications L.P.’s nationwide PCS network to give customers access to messaging and information services.
Lucent’s wireless intelligent network platform will allow PrimeCo’s customers to receive text messages, e-mail, voice mail and paging messages on their PrimeCo phones. SMS also will provide an Internet link to access information, including stock quotes, sports scores, news headlines, lottery results and weather information.
PrimeCo plans to launch its first Lucent SMS systems in New Orleans; Houston; Miami, Tampa and Jacksonville, Fla.; and Richmond and Norfolk, Va. Plans call for other markets to come online before the end of the year.
“SMS will enable us to offer our customers a new array of information services,” said Limond Grindstaff, chief technical officer at PrimeCo.
To provide the service, PrimeCo is installing Lucent’s service node system, a part of the intelligent network that functions as a server within PrimeCo’s digital PCS network.
