CELLPORT INTRODUCES NEW DATA APP SERVER PLATFORM

CellPort Labs Inc. introduced its second-generation communications server platform for wireless data applications in intelligent vehicle communications.

Formerly called Mobile Web, the renamed C/P Connect server platform is “an embedded, programmable gateway between two fragmented environments: the wireless airlinks and the vehicle’s own electronics,” said Tom Kubancik, director of business development for CellPort’s data technologies.

The product is designed to provide the final link of connectivity to vehicles by combining a variety of gateway choices with intelligent data handling and standard protocols, in essence transforming any mobile or remote platform into an Internet node, explained the company.

CellPort added several options to the existing Controller Area Network port, six RS 232 serial ports and two PCMCIA Type 3 expansion slots featured on the original 9710 platform.

The 9720 model also provides configurable serial ports for RS 422 and RS 485, as well as an Ethernet connection.

Developers often worry about choosing an inappropriate airlink standard, and C/P Connect’s universal open profile solves that problem, Kubancik said. “It gives developers an airlink choice.” It does this by using a multitasking operating system, an advanced Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, multiple I/O data connections, wireless device interface builders and Internet/Web serving functions with the use of all standard protocols, standard C programming and Microsoft development tools.

“With our new generation product, we’re providing all the input-output connection options they need. We’re just listening to the needs of our developers.

“The holy grail of communications is not a single communication, but the interoperability of communications,” he said. The airlink “is always going to be fragmented, no matter how ubiquitous network coverage gets.”

Cellport Labs is based in Boulder, Colo.
