CUPERTINO, Calif.-DSP Communications Inc. said it delivered Code Division Multiple Access baseband processor samples to original equipment manufacturer customers for use in subscriber handsets.
At the same time, DSPC and NEC America Inc. announced joint development efforts for Interim Standard 136A-based Time Division Multiple Access subscriber equipment.
DSPC said its IS-95-based D5411 chipset provides complete baseband processing for dual-mode, dual-band handsets. Versatility is extended by providing a CDMA digital mode and any one of several analog modes, including Advanced Mobile Phone Service, Japan Total Access Communications Services, or Narrow TACS. The chipset, with Enhanced Variable Rate Codec support, offers both EVRC and QCELP vocoders for subscriber units, said the company. DSPC said its flexible software-oriented architecture enables easy updates and customization to meet evolving market requirements.
As part of its joint effort with NEC, DSPC plans to supply IS-136A baseband processor chipsets for NEC’s dual-mode TDMA/AMPS DigitalTalk Series cellular phones. Volume shipments of the DigitalTalk phones are expected to start in the fourth quarter. DSPC said NEC’s DigitalTalk Phone will be one of the first on the market to offer the newest ACELP vocoder, also known as the Enhanced Full-Rate Coder.
