ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group signed a contract to expand a cellular network in Brazil operated by Telecomunicacoes de Parana S.A.
The agreement, which Motorola values at $132 million, calls for Motorola to deploy an Advanced Mobile Phone Service network to cover Telepar’s south region. Commercial service is scheduled to begin in January 1998.
Once the expansion is completed, Telepar’s network in the south region will have a capacity of 100,000 subscribers. The region covers 58 cities including Ponta Grossa.
Motorola agreed to install its large-capacity EMX 2500 mobile switch and its digital-ready SC9600 base stations as an overlay to the current network. Equipment distribution will be handled by Motorola’s locally-based company, Motorola do Brasil.
