Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile expanded its Code Division Multiple Access digital wireless phone service to include incoming text messages in New York and New Jersey. The new text messaging service is available to customers for $13 per month for personal computer-based messaging and $25 per month for the combined PC-based and operator-assisted service. No per-message fees or airtime charges are assessed. Bell Atlantic Nynex said it will launch the service in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Pittsburgh.
The California Highway Patrol is using Trimble’s Automatic Vehicle Location System in San Diego county. The system incorporates Global Positioning System technology with a Cellular Digital Packet Data network to transfer location information from the vehicle to the dispatch center. The California Highway Patrol awarded a multi-year contract to Pacific Arepco Inc., the prime contractor for the project, to supply and install the system in 41 patrol vehicles.
