ALASKA-Cellulink Wireless Services has teamed up with the State of Alaska and Phoenix Public Communications to provide cellular pay phones for use by passengers on Alaska’s Marine Highway System ferries.
The first phone already has been installed on the Motor Vessel Aurora. Eight ferries are slated to be outfitted with four phones each.
Alaska’s Marine Highway System runs from Bellingham, Wash., to Skagway, Alaska. It is the only way to travel with a vehicle from one city to another in southeast Alaska, the company said.
Phoenix Public Communications is installing the phones, which are similar to phones used on airplanes, Cellulink said. Customers will pay $1.95 per minute for the service.
