GTE INAUGURATES CDPD IN HAWAII

ATLANTA-GTE Mobilnet Inc. began offering Cellular Digital Packet Data service in Hawaii on the island of Oahu. CDPD uses existing cellular networks to provide wireless access to the Internet and corporate intranets.

Oahu joins more than 150 cellular markets in the United States currently providing wireless packet data service, the company said.

GTE has interoperability agreements with other carriers, which allows customers to access CDPD in more than 4,700 cities and towns nationwide without roaming fees.
