NEW YORK-WinStar Communications Inc. signed agreements to acquire 47 additional 38 GHz licenses and associated business operations. The licenses open new markets for the company as well as expanding its presence in markets including Fort Worth, Texas, Tampa, Fla., Portland, Ore., and Columbus, Ohio.
WinStar already has licenses covering approximately 170 million people. The company estimates its total population coverage will reach 180 million following the acquisition of the licenses.
The transactions, which are subject to Federal Communications Commission approval, are expected to close in the next year. The total purchase price for the licenses will be $17 million, payable in restricted WinStar common stock, the company said.
