HOLLAND, Mich.-Johnson Controls, Motorola Inc. and HighwayMaster launch-ed AutoLink, an intelligent communications system that links subscribers to roadside assistance services, emergency response services, Global Positioning System navigation support, theft notification and interactive messaging and information services.
The AutoLink system also will allow customers to unlock the vehicle’s door, track a stolen vehicle and diagnose automotive problems.
“We have been testing our AutoLink system in many cars and trucks during the past year with great success,” said Michael Suman, vice president of Prince, a wholly owned subsidiary of Johnson Controls. “There is no question in my mind that this is the ultimate answer for driver convenience and security,” Suman commented.
AutoLink is expected to retail as an option on vehicles for about $500, plus a monthly subscription charge. The service will be available for production vehicles by the end of this year, according to the Holland, Mich.-based company.
AutoLink’s integrated overhead display was developed by Johnson Controls’ subsidiary Prince. Motorola will provide the GPS receiver, wireless modem and cellular phone and will be responsible for end-to-end system operations.
HighwayMaster makes the nationwide coverage for two-way voice and data messaging possible with its intelligent wireless private network.
