MCI Communications Corp. launched cellular service in St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Austin, Texas.
To promote the launch, the company said it is offering customers a credit of up to $50 toward domestic cellular long-distance calling from the home coverage area each month.
The St. Louis coverage area includes the city’s local suburban areas and neighboring Illinois towns including Alton and Belleville. The Pittsburgh region covers the metropolitan area including Beaver Falls, Indiana, Butler, Washington and most of southwestern Pennsylvania. The Austin market covers Austin, San Marcos, Georgetown and Taylor, Texas.
MCI offers two service plans. MCI One is a basic package that includes flat rate long-distance calling, toll free one-number service with voice mail, a calling card and optional Internet software with local access, e-mail and wireless services.
The other plan, networkMCI, is targeted at businesses.
