MURRAY HILL, N.J.-Lucent Technologies Inc. said a “soft-handoff” feature deployed in its Code Division Multiple Access infrastructure enables mobile phones to simultaneously maintain a wireless connection to service areas served by different mobile switching centers.
“This achievement proves that there’s no inherent obstacle to CDMA inter-network hand-off, as some CDMA critics have claimed,” said Scott K. Erickson, vice president of marketing for Lucent’s wireless systems. “Rather, it suggests that Lucent’s CDMA implementation has enabled us to be the first with such a feature.”
Lucent said GTE is among the first service providers to include the soft-handoff feature in its digital networks in Texas and California.
