SONY’S HANDSETS PICKED FOR HOUSTON

SAN DIEGO-Sony/Qualcomm CDMA sales, a division of Qualcomm Personal Electronics, will supply Sony CM-D500 handsets for GTE Inc.’s launch of Code Division Multiple Access digital service in Austin, Texas.

The dual-mode phones use Sony’s lithium ion battery technology to increase talk and standby times. The CM-D500 has a five-line liquid crystal display which includes icons to indicate signal strength, battery status, transmission mode, roaming status and other functions.

“We are very pleased to provide GTE with the CDMA digital phones that demonstrate their ongoing commitment to offer customers the best possible products and services available,” said Stephen Burke, vice president and general manager of Sony/Qualcomm CDMA Sales.

GTE said it plans to deploy CDMA service in San Jose, Calif., next month, and in most of its other major markets over the next 15 months.

Qualcomm Personal Electronics is a joint venture of Qaulcomm Inc. and Sony Electronics Inc.
