AEP OFFERS CARRIERS MAINTENANCE AID

COLUMBUS, Ohio-American Electric Power formed a new subsidiary to offer personal communications services licensees assistance in establishing and maintaining their networks.

The non-regulated company is named AEP Communications Inc.

AEP will primarily offer services such as location and construction of antenna facilities and management of PCS sites. The company may also help develop fiber optic systems for utility communications services and energy management services, as well as provide long-haul fiber optic phone and data lines capacity on a wholesale basis to non-affiliated companies.

The company said it is considering providing other services including mobile radio communications services, remote meter reading, real-time pricing, load control and coordination and transmission of data between service vehicles and home offices.

American Electric Power, an investor-owned utility company, provides electric energy to 7 million people in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. Through its subsidiaries, the company pursues investment opportunities in power projects and provides power engineering, consulting and management services.
