PAIGNTON, U.K.-Northern Telecom Inc. will supply Proximity I fixed radio access network equipment and services to Ionica, a new national public telephone operator in the United Kingdom. Proximity wireless access products substitute radio for copper cable to connect customers’ homes and businesses, reducing time and cost of network construction, the company said.
“We believe this is the largest contract yet placed for equipment designed specifically for the fixed wireless access market,” said Bob Dow, managing director of Nortel’s Radio Infrastructure.
Ionica launched service in May of this year.
