AIRTOUCH ACQUIRES CCI CELLULAR ONE

NEW YORK-AirTouch Communications Inc., San Francisco, announced last week it completed its acquisition of Cellular Communications Inc.

At a special meeting, 99 percent of shareholders voting, representing about 82 percent of outstanding CCI stock, approved the merger.

Cellular Communications’ primary business interest is its 50 percent ownership of a joint venture providing cellular service under the Cellular One brand name to approximately 1 million customers in Michigan and Ohio. AirTouch owns the other half of the joint venture.

Terry A. Tindel was appointed executive vice president for AirTouch in Michigan and Ohio, overseeing the 2,300 employees who provide service in its 22 Midwest markets. Tindel formerly served as vice president and general manager for AirTouch Cellular in Atlanta.

With the CCI acquisition AirTouch now has 2.9 million domestic cellular customers. The Michigan and Ohio markets, now operating under the Cellular One brand name, will convert to the AirTouch brand, which then will be offered in a total of 17 states.
