ATLANTA-BellSouth Personal Communications Inc. has changed its corporate name and unveiled a new logo to promote its Global System for Mobile communications-based PCS-1900 service.
The BellSouth Corp. subsidiary said it changed its corporate name to BellSouth Mobility DCS to convey the digital format of the new service while leveraging the consumer recognition of the BellSouth Mobility cellular brand name. DCS stands for digital communications services.
BellSouth Mobility DCS said its logo will appear in retail outlets and on products shortly.
The company has been deploying and testing infrastructure in North Carolina, South Carolina and eastern Tennessee. BellSouth Mobility DCS is part of a consortium consisting of 31 independent telephone companies and subsidiaries of Duke Power and Carolina Power & Light that will operate the service.
The company said it will offer several value packages in its calling plans. Prices for PCS service will be set “slightly below current cellular rates in each market,” the company said, and an unspecified number of minutes of use will be offered at no additional charge.
At-home activation will be another feature of the company’s PCS service.
