STOCKHOLM, Sweden-L.M. Ericsson announced Sercomtel has commercially launched digital cellular phone service using Time Division Multiple Access technology in Brazil.
The system, which is Brazil’s first digital system, will provide service in Lodrina and the surrounding areas for more than 24,000 subscribers, Ericsson said.
Brazil previously had been considering using rival Code Division Multiple Access technology for its digital buildout, said Sven-Christer Nilsson, Ericsson’s executive vice president and general manager for the business unit. Ericsson said its network will offer enhanced features such as sleep mode, call message indicator, short messages, calling number identity and other expanded services to Sercomtel’s customers. Sercomtel is municipally owned and is the only wireless communications provider in the Lodrina area, Ericsson said.
