The Federal Communications Commission was expected late last week or by today to give local and regional paging companies further relief from the paging freeze in response to lobbying by the Coalition for a Competitive Paging Industry.
The FCC, which imposed the freeze Feb. 8 and adopted interim rules April 23 as it develops market-area auction licensing guidelines, will extend the 40-mile expansion measure to all applications filed by Sept. 30, 1995. Moreover, the agency will assure that applications filed by July 31, 1996, will be processed before licenses are sold.
Omnitel meets requirements
Omnitel Pronto Italia, Italy’s new private Global System for Mobile communications operator, announced it has notified the Italian Post Telecom & Telegraph Ministry that it has satisfied all requirements for its Italian licensing agreement since beginning service there in December.
The requirements include a network that reaches more than 52 percent of the Italian territory and more than 78 percent of the population.
