ERICSSON REPORTS WIRELESS INSTALLED IN PUERTO RICO

STOCKHOLM, Sweden-L.M. Ericsson announced its digital Advanced Mobile Phone Service wireless communication system has been put into commercial service in Puerto Rico by Puerto Rico Telephone Co. The system allows PRTC to immediately offer digital services to its frequent users and will provide personal communications services on the 800 MHz frequency band network this summer.

Ericsson said PRTC’s D-AMPS system capacity is about 10,000 subscribers and is expected to expand rapidly. The total number of subscribers now is more than 170,000 and growing. Ericsson said PRTC can upgrade service and expand its network capacity with minimal investment in infrastructure because the digital system is fully compatible with the analog AMPS network already in operation.
