MOTOROLA TO DEPLOY GSM IN INDONESIA

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Motorola Inc. said it has a $30 million contract to deploy a digital cellular phone network for PT Telkomsel in Indonesia.

The Global System for Mobile communications system will be able to serve 50,000 cellular customers in the capital city of Jakarta, the company said. Commercial service is expected to begin this month, according to Motorola’s International Cellular Infrastructure Division. Motorola built a GSM system last year in Bandung and Cirebon that is capable of serving 10,000 subscribers. Commercial service began there last summer. The three Indonesian cities contain about 70 percent of the country’s cellular subscribers, Motorola said.
