WINSTAR, GLENAYRE RECEIVE TOP RANKS IN TWO-YEAR RETURN

Topping the chart for return on investment is WinStar Communications Inc., whose stock in trade is providing digital wireless links that bypass local exchange carriers.

Through its Avante-Garde affiliate, WinStar has received exclusive rights to use Federal Communications Commission licenses in the 38 GHz band in 28 of the largest cities in the United States. “Our shareholders, consultants and industry professionals have all recognized the enormous value of our 38 GHz licenses, and the early successes we’ve experienced in deploying these networks, which provide reliable, cost-effective service,” a WinStar spokesman said.

Glenayre Technologies Inc., which ranks second, is a paging and messaging equipment and systems provider that experienced strong growth last year in both domestic and overseas markets.

ProNet Inc., a paging service provider, ranked fifth. According to Kelly Love, manager of investor relations, ProNet’s strong showing is due to “19 acquisitions closed in the last 22 months that have added over 678,000 paging subscribers to our prior base of 130,000 in 1993.”
