RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J.-MobileMedia Corp. completed the acquisition of BellSouth Corp.’s MobileComm paging subsidiary and its nationwide narrowband personal communications services license. MobileMedia said it paid about $930 million.
The company said it now has a subscriber base of more than four million users-making it the second largest paging carrier in the United States-and more than $560 million in total annual revenues.
MobileMedia said the combined companies will market their services under the MobileComm brand with non-MobileComm properties making the transition during the first half of this year. BellSouth will be allowed to resell MobileMedia’s paging and messaging service under its own name.
“This acquisition represents a milestone in the personal communications industry,” said MobileMedia Chief Executive Officer Gregory Rorke. “It combines the strengths of MobileMedia’s leadership position in alphanumeric wireless messaging along with MobileComm’s leadership in the retail paging arena. With two nationwide networks and two narrowband PCS licenses, we’re poised to provide individuals, businesses, retailers and resellers across the country the products and services they need now and in the future.”
