WESTERN WIRELESS PICKS PCS EQUIPMENT BY NOKIA IN $50M PACT

WESTLAKE, Texas-Western Wireless Corp. announced it signed a multiyear agreement with Nokia Inc. to supply PCS 1900 systems to Western Wireless for its personal communications services network.

The initial commitment calls for deliveries valued at $50 million, with an option to increase to $100 million during the first four years, Western Wireless said. The PCS operator holds six major trading area licenses for broadband PCS. The MTA licenses are in Salt Lake City, Honolulu, Oklahoma City, Portland, Ore., El Paso, Texas and Des Moines, Iowa.

Nokia Telecommunications has said it plans to open a PCS 1900 manufacturing and research and development facility in the United States during the first half of 1996. The Finnish company already has research facilities in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, San Diego and Boston.

PCS 1900 has been accepted by the American National Standards Institute as a North American standard for 1.9 GHz mobile telephone service. PCS 1900 is compatible with the Global System for Mobile communications standard, which is currently operational in more than 100 mobile telephone service operators in 86 countries.
