Working Ventures Canadian Fund Inc., sponsored by the Canadian Federation of Labour, announced it completed a $3 million equity investment as part of a $15 million financing package with co-investors Helix Inc. of Quebec and AT&T Wireless Services in LanSer Wireless Inc. of Montreal and Toronto. Working Ventures’ investment will be used primarily to expand LanSer’s existing operations across Canada and into export markets abroad.
Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp. announced agreements to expand its seamless coverage in the Latin American region with paging and messaging services in Venezuela, Guatemala and Uruguay. In Venezuela, Mtel and Telecomunicaciones Movilnet have formed Telecomunicaciones SkyTel C.A., a joint venture that will provide SkyTel services. Mtel has begun offering services in Guatemala through a joint venture called Mtel Guatemala, and will provide paging services in Uruguay through a recently acquired controlling interest in Radio Aviso, a Uruguayan paging company.
TMI Communications Inc., a mobile satellite network operator in Canada, signed a contract with Transys Networks Inc. of Montreal, to develop a facsimile service for use on the TMI’s mobile satellite network. TMI said the service will store and forward error-free fax messages via satellite to and from an MSAT communicator located anywhere in North America to anywhere in the world.
Telstra Mobile Communications Services, a cellular service provider in Australia, and Boston Technology Inc. announced they have signed a contract making Boston Technology a major supplier of messaging systems for Telstra’s Global System for Mobile communications and analog mobile networks. Boston Technology will supply the Access NP Network Services Platform to Telstra MobileNet Group. The systems support a range of applications for MessageBank customers, including call answering, voice messaging, fax messaging, short messaging service and paging alert.
CellStar Corp. announced it will market personal communications services in Singapore under an agreement with Singapore Telecom. CellStar said Singapore is one of the most rapidly growing markets for wireless communications services in the Asia/Pacific region with an estimated 2.7 million people and market penetration of 9 percent.
