MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.-Sun Microsystems Computer Co. unveiled its Ultra workstation family, Ultra 1 and Ultra 2, designed to help cellular companies expedite cell site planning, engineering and design.
Sun said the workstation incorporates a number of technology innovations that, when coupled with a high-performance microprocessor, result in a system design that outperforms computers that simply feature a fast chip. The workstation allows programs to run two to seven times faster, the company said.
The rapid growth of technologies, including those based on Global Systems for Mobile communications and Code Division Multiple Access standards, calls for increased network performance, according to Mountain View, Calif.-based Sun.
The company noted the workstations eventually can be used to implement real-time wireless applications such as short messaging services, fraud detection services and intelligent billing systems.
Sun said the Ultra family remains 100 percent compatible with more than 10,000 applications written for the Solaris operating environment. This includes applications specifically developed and deployed on the Sun platform for telecommunications.
Over the next 12 to 18 months, Sun said it expects the systems to be deployed for transaction processing domains for billing and network operations. Sun said it has several patents pending for the workstation.
