QUALCOMM CREATES UNIT FOR CDMA ASIC MARKET

SAN DIEGO-Qualcomm Inc. has formed the ASIC Products business unit to provide Application Specific Integrated Circuits for products based on Code Division Multiple Access technology.

The unit will be under the direction of Richard Kerr, vice president and general manager, and will be responsible for the design, development and distribution of CDMA ASICs, which are used in CDMA infrastructure and subscriber products.

Kerr said the unit was formed so Qualcomm could lead the supply of CDMA ASICs. The creation of the ASIC Products unit marks a pivotal period in the commercialization of CDMA, said Richard Sulpizio, Qualcomm’s chief operating officer.

“As service providers move quickly to meet customer demand for CDMA digital service, manufacturers must react by having high-quality wireless products available when and where they are needed,” Sulpizio said.
