AT&T Network Systems Inc. installed a digital wireless data communications system on Tele2000’s wireless network in Lima, Peru. Tele2000 said it was the first to bring cellular telephone service to Peru. AT&T’s Cellular Digital Packet Data system allows subscribers on the network to send data through the network from laptop computers and other devices, such as wireless credit-card verification terminals, the company said.
Florida-based Pacer International and Salora International of India have formed a joint venture company named Pacer India. The venture will bring Pacer International’s global technology to India to provide infrastructure for the telecommunications industry. Through Pacer International’s “switchmaster” process, total systems and management services will be available for all cellular site selection and preparation, the company said. Pacer India’s services include site selection and preparation, architectural and engineering design, product selection and integration, construction, installation and servicing, with a single source to assume accountability.
Motorola Inc.’s International Cellular Infrastructure Division was awarded a $3 million contract to expand and upgrade the existing cellular phone network in Zaire. The network enhancements will increase subscriber capacity and will provide the foundation for a future digital cellular network based on the Code Division Multiple Access standard. System operator, Telecel, will deploy cell sites using Motorola’s narrowband Advanced Mobile Phone Service. Motorola’s contract also calls for installing an electronic mobile exchange 2500 switch in Africa. The EMX 2500 switch is based on a digital platform that provides advanced intelligent network features and switching for Motorola’s analog and CDMA standards.
Boston Technology Inc. will supply CO ACCESS platforms and support services to Paktel Ltd., a cellular company in Pakistan. Based in Islamabad, Pakistan, Paktel serves more than 28,000 subscribers and offers services nationwide, including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Faisalabad. Paktel will provide call answering services to its customers at Lahore and Karachi with the two initial CO ACCESS platforms.
Qualcomm Inc. has formed a subsidiary in Sao Paulo, Brazil, that will promote Qualcomm’s Code Division Multiple Access technology and position Qualcomm to supply wireless infrastructure and subscriber products to South America. The subsidiary, Qualcomm do Brasil SA, also will support the technical cooperation agreement signed by Qualcomm and Telecommunications Brasileiras last April to develop CDMA cellular and wireless local loop systems. The Brazilian government plans to issue digital cellular licenses in the country’s 25 states.
Rogers Cantel Mobile Inc. is expanding its cellular coverage throughout the southern portion of the Manitoba province in Canada. Cities to be covered include Dauphin, Swan River, Roblin, Riding Mountain Provincial Park, Melita, Ericksdale, Gladstone, St. Laurent, Emerson and Lac Du Bonnet, said the company. Coverage also will be provided along the Yellowhead Highway. Expansion work is scheduled to be completed by next summer.
